Correction Re: Free Tree Distribution by Keep Indianapolis Beautiful
Please note the following correction in the previous post:
Corrected Sentence (towards the end): “Trees are to be planted in neighborhoods and not resold.”
It incorrectly read, “Trees are not to be planted in neighborhoods and not resold.”
Sorry, I forgot to correct the mistake before emailing the story to everyone!

Free Tree Distribution by Keep Indianapolis Beautiful
Thanks to a generous donation from Brehob Nursery, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful is offering free trees to community partners to plant in Marion County.
What you need to know:
- These trees are BIG – which makes it even tougher to get them home, planted and cared for in order to survive. Bring a truck or a truck and trailer. THESE TREES WILL NOT FIT IN A CAR! Also, bring a tarp or sheet to protect the trees from wind burn.
- Because of their size and the time of year, these trees will need to be watered TWICE A WEEK until November: 20-30 gallons per week, depending on how much rain we’ve gotten. Next year they will need 20 gallons of water per week for two years.
- These trees have been in their containers a long time. Their roots have grown around in the pot, and up around the trunk, so they need some additional TLC to correctly plant these trees. We will be providing detailed planting instructions when you pickup the tree(s).
- The GOOD NEWS: They’re beautiful, large, vigorous, and FREE! Donations to Keep Indianapolis Beautiful will be accepted on site.
When: Friday, August 6, 2010 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm
Where: 1263 S Harding St., The southeast corner of S Harding St. and W Morris St. Click for Map/Directions
What: Large containerized trees.
Species being offered include:
- Red Maple (Acer rubrum ‘Red sunset’)
- Honey locust (Gleditisia triacanthos ‘Skyline’)
- Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis)
- Shadblow Serviceberry (Amelanchier canadensis).
Availability cannot be guaranteed, trees will be distributed first come – first served.
Bring a truck or a truck and trailer. Trees are to be planted in neighborhoods and not resold. Limit 50 trees per neighborhood.

Weed Enforcement
The Department of Public Works (DPW) and the Marion
County Health Department (MCHD) partner to enforce ordinances for the control of high weeds and high grass on properties within the county. When a report is received, MCHD inspects the property, and if a violation is found, a notice of violation is issued.
After the deadline given in the notice of violation, the property is reinspected. If the property has been mowed, the violation is closed. If the property has not been mowed, it will be mowed by contractors under the direction of DPW or MCHD crews.
After a property has been mowed by DPW or MCHD crews, an invoice is sent to the owner of the property for payment of the mowing and administrative costs incurred. If the invoice is not paid, the City will file a lien against the property for collection with the next property tax payment.
You may report the problem online via the Mayor’s Action Center or call (317) 327-4MAC.
